How it works

The programme takes place over 10 months and is ‘work-based’ – which means that the apprentice begins employment right away, with learning at one of QA’s Academias mixed with a large amount of work-based experience with the Microsoft Partner.

The Microsoft Apprenticeships programme is targeted to learners who have a ‘real passion’ to learn about IT. QA takes potential candidates and thoroughly assesses their suitability for the programme. The best calibre candidates are put onto short lists from which potential employers will select, and hire.
Your learning group

You’ll learn in a group of around 12 – 16 learners – this may comprise apprentices from one company or from several, so even though you may work separately, when you come for tuition at a QA Academy you will learn as one group. You will have a dedicated ‘course leader’ who will be the main person co-ordinating that group of apprentices for the duration of the programme – though there will be expert guest speakers and tutors throughout your programme for specialist topics.
The first days

Your first days on the programme will be an induction by your employer – this takes 2-5 days, and is designed to familiarise yourself with your employer’s business, market, policies and procedures. In short, it’s designed to ‘ease you in’ so you don’t feel dropped into the deep end. This is followed by a 2-day induction at one of QA Academies, to outline how we’re going to provide training, help and support as you develop your skills.
Mixing training and real work

Once prepared, you’ll start the apprenticeship programme. This comprises of periods of structured learning, which takes place at QA Acadamies, followed by similar amounts of time spent doing real work with your employer. For example, you’ll start with several days’ entry-level IT training with QA – taking the PC Fundamentals and compTIA A+ modules. Then you’ll return to your employer and start to put your new-found skills to work. This pattern continues throughout the programme, enabling you to grow your skills and confidence in the workplace in a structured, supported way.
Continual assessment and examinations

The resulting qualification from the apprenticeship programme is not gained from one big test at the end. Apprentices are assessed throughout the programme, often on a one-to-one basis with their course leader, so you gain ‘credits’ towards your final qualification as you progress. You’ll also be taking examinations that lead to industry-recognised qualifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+ and Microsoft certifications. These are ‘stand-alone’ achievements you can be proud of – and they also contribute to the credits required for your Advanced Apprenticeship Framework, which is your ‘graduation’ from the programme.
More than just technical IT skills

Not only are we training you technically we are also giving you ‘soft skills training’ for business such as:
• communications
• customer service
• interaction within the business
• note-taking
• promoting yourself
Graduation

At the end of the programme, successful apprentices are awarded an Advanced Apprenticeship Certificate from e-Skills UK – a qualification recognised nationally and internationally.
The future

QA encourages you to regularly refresh and update your skills and continues to support you throughout your IT career.
