EON Electrical Apprenticeships
at e-on in various, UK
Join our Electrical Apprenticeship and you can look forward to working with like-minded individuals. Challenging, inspiring and exciting – we’ll help you learn and develop both on-the-job and through study. You’ll soon be challenging us, taking the initiative and leading your chosen area forward into the future.
With opportunities in our Delivery Centres across the Midlands, you’ll train with us for up to four years. At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll gain up to a QCF Level 3 qualification and a City & Guilds Certificate in Electrical Engineering.
There are three roles you could be working towards:
- Overhead Linesperson
- Cable Jointer
- Electrical Fitter
Overhead Linesperson
The sky really is the limit if you work on the overhead lines that make up our electrical distribution network. Millions of people will be relying on you to get the job done well. The work can be tough and physically demanding. But it’s also very rewarding, especially when you’re rising to the challenges of emergencies.
An Overhead Linesperson is a qualified craftsperson who carries out construction, maintenance and repairs to the overhead electricity network on either planned work or in fault situations. The overhead line network is subjected to the variety of weather conditions.
We rely on our Linespeople to be flexible and dedicated and they often find themselves working to repair damaged lines during storms and bad weather, aiming to get customers back on supply as soon as possible.
The nature of the work means that Linespeople need to be confident working at heights and will use modern climbing techniques and up to date equipment to assist them in their jobs. It is therefore essential that you are confident with heights (this will be assessed at the practical tests).
The work is physically demanding but extremely rewarding, especially in emergency situations, when Linespeople battle against the elements to restore electricity supplies.
Cable Jointer
Handling 132,000 volts on our underground electricity network can be a real challenge. And with millions of people depending on you, you’ll need to be a strong team player with outstanding levels of concentration. Using the latest techniques, you’d be installing, maintaining and repairing the underground network – as well as responding to emergencies.
A Jointer is a qualified craftsperson who carries out construction, maintenance and repairs to the underground electricity network on either planned or in fault situations. The work is physically demanding and is normally done outdoors.
The underground network is made up from a variety of different cables and link boxes, which enables cables to be interconnected. Access to the underground network is achieved by excavation in highways and private land.
The nature of the work means that Jointers need to be confident working on both low voltage cables (230/400v) and high voltage (11,000v) cables. These cables also vary in size from 16mm to 300mm.
You will use modern techniques to respond to instances of cable damage, fault location and third party interference on the network.
Electrical Fitter
Our substations are at the very heart of the electricity we supply. Keeping them operating effectively through essential construction, maintenance and repairs takes self-control and diligence. Responsible for high voltage equipment, you could be working anywhere from a substation to a shopping centre to a rural farm.
A Fitter is a qualified crafts person who carries out construction, maintenance and repairs to the company’s substations on either planned work or in fault situations. Substations contain a wide range of equipment, much of which is large and operates at very high voltage. Equipment called switchgear enables the electricity to be transformed and transmitted to all areas within the community to the required level of usage. The working environment will also be varied and it will include both indoor and outdoor work.
The nature of the work means that Fitters need to be confident working with electrical and mechanical components of varying sizes; the equipment requires staff who can work in a methodical systematic way. The work requires a higher degree of dexterity and a willingness to work at times in confined spaces. Much of our equipment is located at ground level but you may need to climb ladders or work from a vehicle mounted platform at a height of several metres.
